MORE DOULA TESTIMONIALS
Labor is a process that both you and your husband or partner are going through. Dwenna kept us both focused, fed, and allowed us to fully experience it together, to make it OUR birth, not just mine. And toward the end, when I thought I had nothing left to give, she guided me very deep within to get through those final pushes. This allowed my husband to witness and aid in our son's emergence. Having a doula gave us the freedom to share the experience together.
Dwenna was exactly what I needed without even knowing I needed her! It was like she connected to my body and knew exactly how to help it during labor, massaging and applying counter pressure to my back for hours. She carried such a calm and peaceful presence, I felt totally comfortable around her. Her support and encouragement gave me the confidence to truly 'let go', trust my instincts and deliver my baby. I couldn't have done it without her!
So there I am working on being a first time dad, totally freaked out, and looking perfectly calm on the outside for my bride and these two angels descend from the clouds (metaphorically speaking). Julia and Dwenna, I nicknamed them the 'Birth-Ninjas.' They were incredible. They helped this very scared husband feel like he had a safety net and that he was a part of a team. They didn’t take over, but they guided the whole process. Within five hours, it was all done and they cleaned up everything, it was AMAZING. Karen didn’t know that I was scared that day, and I credit our Doulas with that. Now ten months later, I am still profoundly indebted to those two birth-ninjas that came out on a wintery March day and were ready whenever we needed them. They made my side of the birth experience an incredible one.
The most amazing doula! She was with me through 46.5 hours of labor. The toughest time of my life and she made it so much smoother. Ready to help with anything, always cheering my husband and I on, she is a real jewel. Personal, professional, and always positive. Loved working with her!
Dwenna was a terrific doula and I highly recommend her to anyone. She was instrumental in getting me through the days prior to and during labor. I had experienced prodromal labor for several days before my son was born. Dwenna helped me through that difficult time over the phone and even driving to meet me for lunch at a time when I thought I'd lose my mind if I didn't give birth soon. Although my son's birth didn't go as we had planned, she gave me the support that I needed. Her confidence and strength helped me through the most difficult parts of my labor. I am so glad that I met Dwenna. She is a genuinely warm and generous person
I suppose I should start by saying I was very skeptical about using a doula. I gave Dwenna a very thorough grilling about what her job really entailed. Being very closed minded, I just sat and listened. My wife and I had met 3 other doulas and I have to say I wasn't impressed. After getting my questions answered to the full extent, we decided to go with Dwenna. The meetings before our daughter's birth were good to get to know Dwenna, and if you are reading this: she is amazing. Our baby was scheduled to be a c-section due to her being breach and she decided to come early. Dwenna showed up to the hospital within 20 minutes of the call at 1 a.m. Her support during the laboring process was excellent. She knew all the right questions to ask my wife about her wishes for her health care and was good about trying to help keep her comfortable. During delivery Dwenna was in the OR supporting us and as a first time dad, her being there was worth every red cent. She helped keep my wife calm and once our daughter was born, she gave my wife the play by play with what I was doing. After the birth and once my wife was out of the OR, Dwenna helped start the breast feeding process and then stayed with us another few hours. I was dead set against having a doula and now looking back, I think this was one of the best decisions we made. For our next baby, Dwenna will be one of the first people we call once we know my wife is pregnant. Not going to miss out on having her there to help us!
I am forever grateful that my husband and I hired Dwenna as our doula. We've been in Albuquerque for less than two years and don't have any family in the area, so we knew we wanted some extra support. We both felt immediately at ease with her - she was exactly the right balance of soulful and sarcastic, knowledgeable but humble, helpful without being pushy, and supportive without getting in the way. Her presence added so much to our experience. Our meetings before the birth were fun and organized, helping us to talk through our priorities and get us all on the same page as a birth team. She sent messages of support and helpful suggestions (for yoga poses, meditation practices, and concrete things we could do to prepare for baby/postpartum) throughout the final days of pregnancy. Her presence during labor at home and at the birth center was exactly what we wanted from a doula - she supported us staying connected to each other, noticed when we needed comfort or guidance, cheered us on, celebrated us, and helped to keep the atmosphere quiet and calm throughout the whole process. After our baby was born, she reflected on the birth with us and honored the sacredness of our experience. She connected us to other clients/friends in the community who shared our values, helped me find a ring sling for babywearing, and accompanied me to breastfeed in public for the first time. Having her along for the journey felt like having a sister with us, in the best way possible. I would highly recommend Dwenna to anyone looking for a kind, experienced, supportive presence for any kind of birth!
Dwenna brought peace and support to my pregnancy from the first day that I met her. Our time together preparing for the birth of my 4th child was something I will never forget. She imparted wisdom and strength through her words and information. She was a source of support before labor even began. She encouraged me to follow my instinct and trust my own stregnth. Her advice helped me to go in to labor when it was the perfect time for my body and my baby. She offered incredible support during labor through reassurance, positioning, massage, counter pressure, suggestions, advocacy and more. The peace of mind that I had from knowing she was my 100% champion gave me the strength to have the delivery I had always dreamed of. She was extremely knowledgable and unfaltering even though my baby had shoulder distocia. She remained calm and clear headed and I thank her for [me] being able to deliver my baby boy in the way that I had dreamed, avoiding intervention. She is an incredible person and an amazing Doula.
From the first time we met Dwenna until the moment she walked into the hospital room when I was well into labor, she helped ease our fears. With each meeting prior to the delivery date we felt more and more connected to her as though she was becoming a part of our growing family....As I was in labor Dwenna did an excellent job of coaching me on how to breathe and work through each contraction. She was calm and encouraging and solely focused on me and my needs while ensuring my husband wasn't left out. She was completely supportive with our birth plan and did not impede in any way or try to influence our decisions. Our birth experience was so positive and relaxed that my husband, Dwenna, and I found ourselves able to crack jokes and actually make the process of birthing fun! Not only would I absolutely include Dwenna if I were to ever have another child, but I would absolutely recommend her to anyone who is expecting, whether it be their first time or 10th.
My husband and I were a little hesitant at first about hiring a doula. We interviewed with a couple and Dwenna was the only one I felt comfortable with immediately. My husband was still a bit hesitant about hiring a doula, he thought hiring her would leave him out of the birth. On the contrary, hiring Dwenna was the best thing we did to help welcome our baby girl to the world. Seeing that I was a "high risk" pregnancy and delivery woman we had a very rough pregnancy, especially in the beginning. We had a hard time finding the right team to carry through the whole process to make sure that baby and I would not have many complications. After meeting with several OBs and not feeling comfortable with my situation I felt hiring a doula would help advocate and be our voice of reason when the time came. Dwenna was amazing through the whole process. She allowed my husband and I to be connected... We were both even able to take a nap during labor. We were able to stick to our birth plan for the most part and she helped keep us out of the OR. .... Her massages helped ease the pain while my husband was able to comfort me. Seeing that this will most likely be my only birth, I am so glad we hired Dwenna. No words can tell how appreciative I am with her services. We were able to welcome little Harmony to the world in 11 hours. If you're looking to have a magical birth experience with little needless interventions, Dwenna is the perfect doula!
On April 29 2016, I had the most amazing birth experience with my 3rd child. I don't think it would've been the same without Dwenna Nelson's help and support. I wanted to experience a natural birth and allow things to progress on their own. I was referred to Dwenna and went to one of her prenatal yoga classes to meet her. I immediately felt drawn to her and knew she was the right person to help me reach my goals. Her knowledge, support and resources prepared me both physically and mentally for what would be the most beautiful labor and birth experience. From the prenatal yoga that helped my body and mind, to the reassuring conversations and messages, Dwenna was there for me and my fiancée every step of the way. The week leading up to my baby's birth I had been in early labor with mild regular contractions. Dwenna checked in with me daily, offering support, and reassurance, putting my mind at ease. On my due date, I checked in with Dwenna after my appointment to let her know everything was fine, and there were no changes. A few minutes later, my contractions started intensifying. About a half hour later I checked into OB triage and I was already in transition. My sweet baby girl was born about 10 minutes after walking in. Active labor was a breeze, contractions were really manageable using breathing and focus techniques I learned with Dwenna, and once I began pushing I was able to just tune into what my body was telling me to do and just go with the flow. My first 2 active labors were each about 12 hours long, with epidurals and episiotomies! This time I got exactly what I was hoping for, no epidural, no IV's, no episiotomy, and the whole thing lasted under 1 hour from the time the contractions picked up steam to the time baby was born. I got even more than I had hoped for, a truly easy and smooth labor and birth experience! I can't express enough gratitude for everything Dwenna has done for me!
I don't even know how to begin expressing what an amazing job Dwenna did supporting my husband and I through our daughter's birth! We especially appreciated that she et with us a few times before our due date and then followed up after the birth to make sure we had the support we needed. While we had planned for a natural birth, we found out at 38 weeks that our baby was breech and that I would be having a c-section. Then when my water broke and I went into labor the day before our scheduled procedure, Dwenna was at the hospital 20 minutes after we called her. She helped us both stay focused and ask the right questions of the staff while we were waiting for the OR. During the actual surgery she was by our side. Once our daughter was born and my husband stepped away, Dwenna was right in his spot giving me the play by play of what was happening with our daughter until they both came back over to me. She stayed with us in recovery, helping me initiate breastfeeding and making sure we had what we needed. Dwenna has such a great personality and is genuinely passionate about ensuring that you have the birth experience you desire. We will definitely be calling her for the birth of our next child!
I knew from the beginning that I wanted to find a Doula early on to support and have there with us on our special day. I didn't want just anyone and definitely did not want to settle with whomever the hospital gave me. Matching personalites and basic commonalities were key to us finding a doula. After a few interviews, we were finally able to find Dwenna. My partner and I both loved her from the begining. She was able to connect with us on a non-doula level (as friends) and then as a doula, offering educational resources and literature to help guide us on our 9 month journey. My partner and I had everything planned out (for the most part) up to the delivery on the big day. Dwenna was a large part of that. She helped us prepare, but stay calm and excited. Sadly, nothing we planned worked out, but we as well as Dwenna were able to adjust to the unavoidable journey to birthing, pretty gracefully. She was there, offering emotional support to both myself and my partner, holding my hand when I needed it held and never far from sight. Her presence was a relief for both of us and I was honered to have her there to witness the birth of my healthy daughter, for Dwenna to be able to hold her and to help guide me through the very important, first initial breastfeeding. Although the birth of my daughter has come and gone Dwenna will always be a part of that story and I feel like I gained a new friend from it, and for that I am truly grateful.
